Google reviews for a local business: how to collect them, reply and show them on your site

Reviews weigh on local ranking and on the buying decision. A simple method to gather them regularly, without buying or begging.

01

Why reviews count twice

Google uses the number, recency and content of reviews among its local ranking signals. Customers read reviews before choosing, often without even opening the site. A business with few recent reviews is penalised on both fronts.

The goal is not five stars everywhere. A high rating with detailed, recent reviews that the owner answers inspires more trust than a perfect score with no text.

02

Asking at the right moment

The best moment is right after the service, when satisfaction is concrete: at the till, in the confirmation e-mail, on the receipt or in a message the next day. A direct link to the review form, or a QR code, removes the main obstacle.

Ask everyone, not just enthusiastic customers. Choosing who gets the request breaks Google’s rules, and an overly smooth profile looks suspicious.

03

Reply to every review, especially the bad ones

A short, factual reply to a negative review shows future customers how you handle a problem. Thank them, acknowledge what is true, offer a solution offline. Never dispute the details publicly.

Reply to positive reviews too, with one personalised sentence. It signals an active business and encourages the next ones.

04

What is forbidden

Buying reviews, offering a discount for a review, having relatives write them or posting reviews about competitors exposes you to removal of reviews, even of the profile. In Belgium, fake reviews also fall under misleading commercial practices.

Tools that filter unhappy customers before sending them to Google also break the rules. The only sustainable method is the systematic, honest request.

05

Showing them on your site

Quoting a few reviews on the site, with name, date and a link to the source, strengthens the credibility of service pages. Prefer a static display updated from time to time over an external widget that slows the page.

Do not add rating markup for reviews copied from Google: Google rejects it for reviews it did not collect on your site itself, and it can trigger a manual action.

Frequently asked questions

Can a negative review be removed?
Only if it breaks Google’s rules: fake, off-topic, abusive or posted by a competitor. Otherwise the public reply is your only lever.
How many reviews do I need?
There is no threshold. Aim for a steady flow: a few reviews a month do more than fifty in one week, which looks artificial.
Does a review in Dutch help French-speaking customers?
Yes. Google understands languages, and multilingual reviews reflect a real Brussels clientele.
